Week 6 stats
Over on Twitter @NwslNotes tracks attendance closely. Let's look at the game I just saw in Chicago:
The Chicago game was the lowest in the league, at only 4500 people. What's really strange is the two lowest attendance cities, Chicago and New York together make up some of the most popular cities in the country. Chicago is the nation's 3rd largest city at about 2.7 million residents while the NYC area ranks first.
With such a huge pool of potential fans, why are these cities getting the least people to show up to watch games? Is it a saturated marketplace (both towns have NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, etc. home teams)? Is it a bad stadium? Is it bad/boring play by the team?
I have my inklings of what may cause it. In Chicago, I think it's the location, which doesn't have mass transit options and is too far out of downtown Chicago so anyone wanting to attend a game has to own and drive a car, or be ready to pay about $50 in Uber fees.
